MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT PLANS
Medicare Supplement policies are sold by private companies.
Some Medicare Supplement policies also cover services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medicare Supplement policy, here's what happens:
*Medicare Supplements are Guaranteed Renewable. Even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can't cancel your policy as long as you pay the premiums.
*It is illegal to sell a Medicare Supplement to an individual enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then, your Medicare Supplement policy pays its share. If there is a balance due, that will be your responsibility.
There are ten different standardized Medicare Supplement insurance plans. Plan availability varies by state and by insurance company. Each plan has a different level of coverage. (Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have their own standardized Medicare Supplement insurance plans.)
ALTHOUGH THE PLANS ARE STANDARDIZED BY MEDICARE, PLAN PREMIUMS AND ADDITIONAL COVERAGES VARY FROM ONE INSURANCE CARRIER TO ANOTHER.
What is Medigap (also known as a Medicare Supplement)?
A Medigap plan is a supplemental Insurance policy, that helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn't pay:
